After struggling with getting my printed photography portfolio to a place where I could call it "done" for the past few weeks, I came across this story and video on Lifehacker...apparently these things take time.
Ira Glass, host of National Public Radio's This American Life, knows a thing or two about turning the creative process into a polished, finished product—but he also remembers turning out work he didn't necessarily want to put his stamp on. This video, part of an interview series on story telling, features some great advice about working through those first few attempts—or even years—where your product doesn't quite meet your standards, as well as Glass pulling out some honestly awkward examples from his own portfolio.
In an effort to keep this blog relatively fresh, I've decided to post something at least once a week...maybe it won't be an update on my whereabouts or activities, but it will at least be something interesting/strange/funny that I've found on the internet this week. So here it is: take a break, donwload a template, do some cutting and pasting, and make your own pinhole camera! You don't need to be a photographer to try this.
Here are some good examples of pinhole photos, if you've never seen them.
I photographed the Regional Air Guitar Championship last week at the Metro...This is the almighty Nordic Thunder, he beat out 20 finalists and he's going to San Fran to represent Chicago in the national finals, then hopefully on to Finland for the international title.
Quiksilver's skateboarding team used my band Able Baker Fox's song on the commercial for their new video "Journey into the Vortex." You can see the clip on their home page, check it out.
We had the pleasure of seeing the legendary Jeremy Enigk of Sunny Day Real Estate and Damien Jurado at the Abbey last night. They both were absolutely amazing, Jeremy voice is superhuman and he played many many old Sunny Day songs, definitely worth going to see in person. This video is "How it Feels to Be Something On..." (we had a pretty good view). Enjoy!
The good people at Time Out Chicago hired me to take the photos for their 'bike love' story last week, you can read it online here. It was a fun project to do, met some really interesting and inspiring people.
On Saturday, April 19, 2008, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate “Record Store Day.” Be sure to get out there and support your local independent record store...can't think of anything to buy? Might I suggest the new Able Baker Fox.
